Dysport is a neuromodulator used to treat wrinkles and prevent physical signs of aging, primarily on the face. Other neuromodulators currently on the market include Botox, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Dysport is one of the most commonly used due to its quick onset and long-lasting effects.
There are many areas we can treat with Dysport or other neuromodulators, though the most common areas are between the brows, the forehead, and around the eyes. I’m going to discuss all the possible areas we can treat with Dysport and my most commonly used doses for each area.
Understanding Dosage and Customization
Dose is based on patient need and a combination of patient and provider preference. Each provider will average different doses for different areas based on their own preferences and past experiences. Keep in mind that the larger the dose, the more of an effect and longevity you will experience from your treatment. However, the larger the dose, the less movement you will be left with initially. I have some patients who are actors or therapists and it’s important for them to show empathy or express emotion. In these cases, we sacrifice a little longevity in order to allow for more authentic facial expressions. Some patients (myself included) prefer longevity and a more effective treatment and tolerate limited movement for the first month or so as the dose progressively wears off.
When tailoring your dose, keep in mind that men have a larger percentage of muscle mass than women and always need a larger dose. In addition, if you have a killer metabolism or spend a lot of time working out, your treatment will most likely wear off sooner. This doesn’t mean you should sacrifice working out for your Dysport, just keep in mind you will likely need a larger dose to make it the full 3 months of longevity or will have a month of movement before you can be retreated. Even if you are getting a smaller dose to allow for more movement, you should still wait at least 12 weeks between appointments. Studies show that being retreated more often than 12 weeks promotes the production of antibodies against the neuromodulator, which means there is a potential for it to no longer work for you in the future.
We tailor all our doses and treatment areas based on your needs and priorities. Here is a list of possible treatment areas and my average doses for each. Remember that these doses are just examples of my averages, and it doesn’t mean that I never go above or below these ranges.
Common Treatment Areas
Glabella (Frown Lines) The glabella is the area between the brows that gives us the “angry 11s,” or the muscle that allows us to scowl. Treating this area can create a more relaxed and approachable appearance.
- Typical dose: 15-25 units
Forehead (Horizontal Lines) The forehead muscles allow you to raise your eyebrows. Treating this area can smooth out horizontal lines, giving a youthful appearance while maintaining natural expressions.
- Typical dose: 10-20 units
Crow’s Feet (Lateral Canthal Lines) Crow’s feet are the lines around your eyes that appear when you squint or smile. Reducing these lines can make you look more refreshed and vibrant.
- Typical dose: 9-16 units/side
Bunny Lines (Nasal Lines) Bunny lines are the wrinkles that form on the sides of your nose when you sniff or smile. Treating this area can help maintain a smooth nasal bridge and enhance facial harmony.
- Typical dose: 6-9 units
Masseters (Jawline Contouring) These are the muscles on the back of your jaw that cause you to clench. Treating this area can alleviate symptoms of TMJ, reduce headaches, and create a slimmer facial profile. This treatment also helps with bruxism (teeth grinding).
- Typical dose: 20-30 units/side
Chin (Mentalis) The chin muscle, called the mentalis, helps you to frown. Overuse causes a deep, horizontal “mental crease” and an orange peel-like texture. Treating this area can smooth out these imperfections and create a more balanced facial appearance.
- Typical dose: 6-8 units
Platysmal Bands (Neck Rejuvenation) Your platysma is an important muscle in your neck. As we age, these bands start to pull away from our jaw, contributing to skin laxity beneath the jaw. Treating this area can improve the contour of the neck and jawline, creating a more youthful profile.
- Typical dose: ~20 units
DAOs (Depressor Anguli Oris) The depressor anguli oris muscle allows you to frown. Overuse can lead to lines below the corners of your mouth and a downward turn at rest. Treatment can lift the corners of the mouth, creating a more pleasant and youthful expression.
- Typical dose: 4-8 units
Lip Flip (Perioral Enhancement) The lip flip treatment targets the muscle that causes you to purse your lips, which over time creates vertical lip lines. This treatment also allows more of the top lip to show when smiling, enhancing the appearance of fullness and creating a subtle but noticeable improvement in lip shape.
- Typical dose: 4-6 units
Gummy Smile (Smile Enhancement) Some patients have a strong pull on their top lip when they smile, exposing more of their gums. Treating this area can create a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile by reducing the gum exposure.
- Typical dose: 4-6 units
Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) This treatment is for excessive sweating and can be done on various areas of the body. Due to the large doses needed, the effects typically last longer than in other treatment areas.
- Typical doses:
- Armpits: 50 units/side
- Palms of hands: 100 units/side
- Soles of feet: 150 units/side
Microtox (Fine Line Reduction) Microtox involves injecting neuromodulators into the dermis to address fine, superficial lines. It is commonly used for “accordion lines” around the smile or to improve texture issues on the neck and chest. This technique can provide a subtle lift and a smoother skin texture without significantly altering facial expressions.
- Typical dose: Area dependent
The Lip Flip Treatment
The lip flip is a popular treatment that uses Dysport to enhance the upper lip’s appearance. By injecting small amounts of Dysport into the orbicularis oris muscle (the muscle around the mouth), the top lip relaxes and flips outward, giving the illusion of a fuller upper lip without adding volume. This treatment is ideal for those who want a more pronounced lip shape without committing to dermal fillers.
- Typical dose: 4 units
Dysport’s Role in Anti-Aging and Wellness
Dysport works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals to the muscles, preventing them from contracting and creating wrinkles. This action not only smooths out existing lines but also prevents new ones from forming. By reducing muscle activity in targeted areas, Dysport helps maintain a youthful, refreshed appearance. The treatment is quick, minimally invasive, and has little to no downtime, making it a convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.
Why Choose Dysport?
Dysport offers several advantages over other neuromodulators:
- Quick Onset: Dysport tends to work faster than other neuromodulators, with results often visible within a few days.
- Natural-Looking Results: Dysport’s formula spreads more evenly, creating a natural look without the “frozen” appearance.
- Long-Lasting Effects: Dysport’s effects can last up to 4 months, providing lasting improvements.
