Botox is being appreciated nationally in the U.S. on Wednesday, November 17th (2021) Botox Day. We love Botox at RUMA, so we thought we would take time to talk about the history, benefits, and tips surrounding Botox! Don’t miss the Allergan Botox Day promotion at the bottom of this blog post!
History of Botox
The name Botox is short for the medication name, Botulinum Toxin. The toxin was used in the 1970s to treat a condition called strabismus (crossed eyes) and was soon recognized as a ‘wrinkle reducer’ due to the medicine’s ability to relax muscles in the face. In 2002 the FDA approved the use of Botox for smoothing out glabellar lines (across the forehead), and its benefits have multiplied since then.
Since 2002, Botox has been approved for:
– Excessive Sweating (Axillary hyperhidrosis)
– Chronic Migraines
– Upper Lip Spasticity
– Urinary Incontinence
– Crow’s Feet (lateral canthal lines)
Benefits of Botox
Botox is mainly known for its anti-aging effect on facial wrinkles. Your face is the first thing people generally notice when they meet you, and Botox can preserve the appearance of youth in the face. Reducing wrinkles, for many people, helps them to enjoy life and its stages with more ease. Cost-friendly and non-invasive, Botox is a wonderful option to improve skin quality and texture.
Botox is most often used to target these aesthetic challenges
– Forehead lines
– Crows feet line around the eyes
– Frown lines between the eyebrows
– Lips (lip-flip, lip spasms, wrinkles)
– Chin (dimples, uneven muscle pull, wrinkles)
– Neck (necklace lines or vertical platysmal bands)
– Masseter muscle hypertrophy (lower face slimming)
In recent years, Botox has become increasingly popular for non-cosmetic treatments. At RUMA,
we use this medicine to treat uncomfortable tension in areas such as
– Masseter muscle(s)
– Temple muscle(s)
– Trapezius muscle(s)
– Neck Muscle(s)
Many patients clench their jaw often, resulting in tension through the masseters and temples. This unrelenting tension usually causes migraines, and Botox relaxes that tension. Other patients find that they hold a significant amount of stress in their trapezius muscles and the back of their neck; At RUMA, our injectors can help you create a plan using Botox (and Dysport) to reduce tension.
In order to experience the full benefits of Botox, we recommend that you receive the medication every 3-4 months. Read more about why keeping up on your Botox & Dysport is so essential.
RUMA’s tips for using Botox:
First, make sure Botox works best for you and your needs. You can work with our injectors to discuss your physiology and lifestyle to determine if Botox or Dysport (another botulinum toxin) will work best for you.
Secondly, we recommend using Botox for both anti-aging benefits and discovering how it can reduce tension. Tension is a leading cause of headaches and migraines and can cause many other health problems. If you are experiencing muscle tension, talk with our injectors about how Botox can help.
Lastly, we recommend paying close attention between doses to any changes in the medication’s effectiveness. We are extremely particular and precise with our Botox injections at RUMA, and we want to make sure you are getting the most out of it! Let your injector know if you notice certain areas wrinkling quicker or any effects you’re not satisfied with. Almost all dissatisfaction with Botox can be addressed by tweaking the dosage.
